Cut a Rug Branding of a club night
Established DJs and Producers Will Clarke and Jason Honeywell were starting a new club night – Cut a Rug – and required a graphic design agency to develop their brand identity. They contacted Manchester design agency Superfried requesting that they would like their club night to feel like it had always been part of the scene.
Inspired by the name, design experimentation led to numerous design iterations using the initial letter. The final creative solution emerged as a bespoke letter ‘C’ segmented via distinct incisions to form a bold, simple, and memorable marque. This creative direction also provided a versatile container that could be styled, mask imagery, or rendered in different mediums for promotional branded material such as flyers, posters, and animated logo idents.
The client was excited by the design solutions proposed, so encouraged further experimentation. With a free rein, I stepped away from the Mac exploring stencils, spray paint, paper craft, toothbrushes, smoke, and torn paper. This design process led to an eclectic mix of robust, creative solutions that would ensure each event was distinct yet clearly part of the same brand identity.
Additional marketing material included t-shirts and the commission of bespoke Cut a Rug logo lightboxes to be situated behind the DJs. Installed with a control system the light colour could be altered and synced to the music. For promotional videos, a short animated logo ident was developed. Since the launch Cut a Rug has graced various club venues in the UK and Ibiza.
